About This Plant

Florida Aquatic Nurseries grows Aponogeton madagascariensis . The Madagascar lace plant, as it is commonly known, is one of the most ornate of all aquarium plants. Aponogeton madagascariensis is an aquatic plant native to the island nation of Madagascar. Aponogeton madagascariensis is an excellent aquarium plant with readily recognizable, distinctive dark green net-like leaves. Newer leaves are sometimes a bronze color and darken with maturity. Aponogeton madagascariensis are bulb plants and will sometimes go dormant. Just be patient, leave the plant in position, and continue with excellent over-all care of the aquarium. New leaves will begin to sprout in time. A dry rest period is not recommended for this plant. Consistently excellent aquarium conditions with good water flow, and regular supplementation with a complete aquarium fertilizer will keep the plant in the best long-term health. It is a very large plant at maturity and a heavy feeder.

About the Aponogeton Genus

Family — Aponogetonaceae

Aponogeton are bulb plants that produce long, flowing leaves and benefit from a seasonal rest period — many varieties will die back, then resprout from the bulb after a few months of dormancy. They are dramatic background plants for medium-light tanks.

Difficulty — Intermediate

Grows reliably in moderate-tech tanks. Benefits from steady fertilization and adequate light, but does not require CO2 to survive.

CO2 & Fertilization

CO2 supplementation is recommended for best growth and color. Liquid carbon (Easy Carbon, Excel) is a workable substitute, though pressurized CO2 produces the strongest results.

Tank Size & Setup

Best in tanks 20 gallons or larger so background stems have room to grow up and be trimmed without overtaking the foreground.

Aquascaping & Placement

Place in the midground between foreground carpets and tall background stems. The structure adds visual depth and shelters small fish and shrimp. Set the bulb on top of the substrate, not buried, until roots take hold. Expect a dormant period after flowering.

Tank-Mate Compatibility

Compatible with the full range of community-tank species — tetras, rasboras, livebearers, corydoras, and most other peaceful freshwater fish do not damage the foliage.

Common Care Issues

Slow initial growth

Most aquarium plants pause for 2-4 weeks after planting while they convert from their nursery-grown emersed form to fully submerged growth. New leaves that emerge underwater will look thinner and slightly different — this is the plant adapting, not a problem.
