About This Plant
Pogostemon helferi has been know to since for many years, but was discovered for aquarium purposes by Nonn Panitvong and Arthit Prasartkul in 2006. Until it was properly identified, it was was given the name “Downoi”, which means “little star” in Thai. This plant comes from the northwestern part of Thailand, in the area of the Kwai river and its tributaries close to the Myanmar border. The water there has some calcium carbonate in it. These plants, in nature grow on and between the rocks in their environment. Pogostemon helferi is a delightful little foreground plant of unique texture. It does best in a tank with good light and supplemental CO2, but can also be grown successfully in excellent conditions in a tank without CO2 as long as the water is not too soft. In the aquarium they will do very well planted in a soil based substrate or can be grown over rocks as they would in the wild. The stems are quite brittle, and prone to floating, so must be handled with care during planting. In conditions not to their liking, they are prone to losing their leaves.
About the Pogostemon Genus
Family — Lamiaceae
Pogostemon are stem plants in the Lamiaceae family with distinctive whorled leaves. Several species are demanding — strong light and CO2 produce their best color and form, while low light leads to thin, stretched stems.

Difficulty — Intermediate
Grows reliably in moderate-tech tanks. Benefits from steady fertilization and adequate light, but does not require CO2 to survive.
CO2 & Fertilization
CO2 supplementation is recommended for best growth and color. Liquid carbon (Easy Carbon, Excel) is a workable substitute, though pressurized CO2 produces the strongest results.
Tank Size & Setup
Suits tanks of any size. Foreground carpeting plants work especially well in 10-40 gallon planted setups where the viewer is close to the substrate.
Aquascaping & Placement
Use as a foreground carpeting plant. Plant small portions on 2-3 cm centers and let runners fill the gaps over 4-8 weeks. Plant the root crown just at the substrate surface. Burying the crown causes the plant to push itself back up over a few days.
Tank-Mate Compatibility
Compatible with the full range of community-tank species — tetras, rasboras, livebearers, corydoras, and most other peaceful freshwater fish do not damage the foliage.
Pro Tips for Growing Family Name: Lamiaceae
- 1Pogostemon helferi (downoi) needs strong light and CO2 to stay compact — without them it stretches upward.
- 2Don't bury the leaves when planting; only the roots go into the substrate.
Common Care Issues
Slow initial growth
Most aquarium plants pause for 2-4 weeks after planting while they convert from their nursery-grown emersed form to fully submerged growth. New leaves that emerge underwater will look thinner and slightly different — this is the plant adapting, not a problem.
