Captive Bred Saddled Hippocampus Erectus Seahorses

Livestock Description: Aquaculture License #: AQ3616100

Species: Hippocampus erectus

Common names: Lined Seahorse, Northern Seahorse, Spotted Seahorse

Beautiful bright silver saddling markings and tail bands. Line markings are more pronounced as the seahorse matures. Colors are yellow, peach, golden, dark or beige. Color is not fixed and seahorses can change color based on their surroundings (such as ornaments in the aquarium or background), diet, mood and other factors. Our selecting breeding pairs for our seahorse fry have been selected for producing beautiful saddling markings. Every single seahorse is individually unique and has their own personality.

This genetic line of seahorses originates from South Florida. We sell our Captive Bred seahorses when they are 4-5 months old and they are approximately 3-4+ inches. You can expect your seahorse(s) to reach 5-7+ inches by adulthood. Hippocampus Erectus is the most common seahorse species hobbyist start out with. They are very hardy and are a great beginner seahorse!

All of our captive bred seahorses are very healthy, active, friendly and full of personality! Our seahorses are trained to eat frozen Mysis shrimp from a young age. We recommend feeding our seahorses Hikari Mysis shrimp 2 to 3 times daily. Seahorses are known to be a very social animal, and tend to be more active when kept paired or in a group environment.

Basic Care:

Saltwater Aquarium tank size: 30 gallon aquarium is the minimum recommended aquarium size for a pair of captive bred seahorses. An additional 15 gallons is recommended for every additional pair of seahorses. A larger aquarium is even better. Minimum aquarium height is 18 inches.

Tank environment: bare bottom or sand substrate is up to you. MUST have hitching posts (artificial branch like corals, live gorgonians). Seahorses do best in a species only aquarium without stinging corals, anemones, clams or aggressive fish or invertebrates.

Temperature: our recommended temperature is 68-74 degrees F. If you need a heater, this should have a guard on it so that the seahorses do not get burned. They have a tendency to hitch tighter when they are scared or hurt, this would lead to a severe burn. The heater can also be placed in your sump away from the seahorse. A chiller can be used to regulate the temperate in your tank.

Feeding: Seahorses need to be fed 2-3 times daily. We use Hikari Mysis shrimp.  Spirulina enriched frozen brine shrimp can also be fed as a snack to diversify your seahorse’s diet but does not offer much nutritional needs.

**PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY FROZEN MYSIS THAT HAS NOT BEEN EATEN AFTER 30-45 MINUTES SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE TANK TO ELIMINATE ADDED NITRATES IN YOUR WATER. **
